Gadens Melodi: recognition and the work behind it

Best Indie Feature Film at Cannes World Film Festival in 2021 became part of my debut's story. I want that recognition to lead people back to the work and its collaborators.

A retrospective on the recognition and interviews around Gadens Melodi in 2021–2022. First published on 23 October 2026.

I want people to discover Gadens Melodi through the recognition it received, and then stay for the film itself. Best Indie Feature Film at Cannes World Film Festival in 2021 gave my debut another part of its story. For an independent production, it meant the work could reach people beyond those who had helped bring it into existence.

The name of the festival matters. The recognition was from Cannes World Film Festival, and that is the event I want to credit. A laurel should make it easier to understand a film's journey. It should leave a viewer with a clear account of what was recognised, where and when.

Different distinctions, accurately remembered

Alongside the win, the archive includes a Best European Film nomination at Cannes World Film Festival in 2021, official selections for Filmmaker Sessions Volume 11 and First-Time Filmmaker Sessions Volume 13 in 2021, and finalist recognition at New York Cinematography Awards in 2022. They are different results, and each has its own place in the film's history.

I am pleased to be able to show that history alongside the original laurels and the relevant coverage. It lets someone follow the recognition back to the film, rather than asking them to take a row of symbols on trust. The details make the record more useful to an audience, a journalist or someone discovering my work for the first time.

What sits behind the artwork

A debut begins before any of those distinctions are possible. It begins with a story, a production and people prepared to contribute. Ryan's part in the film and the support around the independent production remain part of what I want to acknowledge when I speak about Gadens Melodi.

The film follows a young man pulled between his wish to help his mother and the pressures of a violent world. That human situation is what I wanted an audience to enter. An award can bring a viewer to the film; the characters and their choices have to carry the experience from there.

A conversation beyond the result

The festival interview offered room to discuss the directing itself. I spoke about preparation and the way I wanted performances to retain the feeling of real conversation. Those questions remain more interesting to me than repeating a result on its own, because they begin to explain the choices behind what someone sees.

I also want the record to remain open to discovery. Someone might arrive through an award, a trailer, an interview or a still. Each route should lead to a fuller picture of the same work: who made it, what I contributed as director and what the film was trying to do.

Recognition matters to me. I am ambitious about where my work can go, and I want the films to find an audience. What I want to carry forward from Gadens Melodi is the determination behind making that first feature, together with a growing understanding of how to make the next one better.
